Environment and Health poses a challenge for truly interdisciplinary research: it requires contributions from the physical, biological and social sciences to understand the cause and effect relationships between human health and the environment.

Background Information

The EHF Interdisciplinary Research Fund supports research focusing on the continuum from environmental pollution emissions, to exposures, to health effects. EHF supports research on the epidemiological, toxicological, geographical and environmental aspects of Environment and Health in Israel as well as research on relevant social, political, economic, ethical, and legal issues. EHF seeks innovative research that relates to specific environment and health concerns in Israel.

EHF's primary interest is in understanding and mitigating the impact on humans of low dose chronic exposure to man-made environmental pollution in Israel. EHF seeks to promote interdisciplinary, innovative research that relates to specific environment and health concerns in Israel.

It is anticipated that the outcome of the research supported by EHF will be helpful in understanding the environmental burden of disease in Israel and in creating interventions and policies designed to reduce this burden.

The specific topics and questions EHF is interested in addressing include:

• Understanding the nature and extent of exposure of the population in Israel to polluted air, water, soil and food; identifying, validating and implementing methods for exposure assessment.

• Understanding the geographic and disease specific nature and extent of the environmental burden of disease in Israel; identifying and understanding specific population susceptibilities and how they interact with exposure to pollution.

• Understanding the political, economic and social factors that contribute to environment and health in Israel; identifying and assessing technical and regulatory methodologies and points of intervention which contribute to reduction of pollution, prevention of adverse health effects, and remediation of polluted media.
