The Environment and Health Fund (EHF) was established in 2007 as a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization. EHF policies are set by its Chairman and Board of Directors.
Vision & Mission
The Environment and Health Fund (EHF) is based on a vision of a responsible national Environment and Health capability with the ability to monitor, assess and reduce environmental health risks and hazards. We envision a system where well-trained academics and professionals provide the expertise needed to create an integrated research strategy and to conduct research and analysis which will lead to sound decision making, public policy, and regulatory standards. The end result will be improved human health and environmental quality.
EHF defines its mandate as upgrading capabilities in Israel to address existing and emerging issues of Environment and Health with greater competence and expertise. EHF is not intended to substitute for existing institutions, but rather to improve capacity, building capabilities in both academic and professional settings. EHF is therefore committed to maintaining a small infrastructure while focusing most of its efforts and resources on building professional capacity outside the organization.
Goals
EHF will support applied research, training, collaboration and communication, with the goals that:
- The scientific quality of Environment and Health research will be enhanced through the creation of an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed research fund which will allocate funds for applied research in Environment and Health and through the seeding of university-based centers of excellence for training and research.
- A cohort of highly trained academics and practitioners will be active in the field, with strong academic and professional links with experts overseas, and able to offer a broad perspective on Environment and Health issues.
- Environmental pollution problems will be prioritized according to health outcomes, utilizing the results of applied research, thereby enhancing the scientific foundation for decision-making.
- Commitments of private and public resources to Environment and Health problems will be increased reflecting awareness among academics and professionals of the complexity of Environment and Health issues and of the importance and value of interdisciplinary, applied research and training.
- Evidence-based, well-communicated information will be regularly made available to the public through meetings, lectures, conferences and workshops and via a website.
- A community of scientists, researchers, students, professionals, and decision-makers from academia, industry, government, and citizens groups engaged in understanding and improving Environment and Health in Israel will be created.
